Wharf Rats and Other Stories – 100 Years of Growing up in Fremantle.

FIRST PRIZE FREMANTLE HERITAGE AWARD.

Fremantle Primary School P&C Association is proud to announce the relaunch of this wonderful book.

Here is your chance to own a unique piece of our city’s history and the stories of her people. This beautiful book has captured a snapshot in time, depicting what life was like for the people growing up in Fremantle, particularly during the 1920’s and 1930’s.

Karen Lang and Jan Newman are Freo locals, who were parents at Fremantle Primary School at the time they wrote the book in 2004. They wanted to commemorate the school’s 100th anniversary with something special and came up with the idea of collecting the stories of people who had attended the school in the last 100 years.

The driving theme of the book is illuminated in the introduction:

“They were vivid tales of growing up in Fremantle over the last century, with the school as the common link. … Fremantle is rich with social history which should be passed on to each new generation and we hope that these stories will connect the elderly with the young. Fremantle is famous for its architectural heritage but modern residents don’t often pause to think of the previous inhabitants of their homes or the many earlier families whose children attended Fremantle Primary School as ours do today. These former students were willing to share with us their stories, through which we can rediscover the Fremantle enjoyed by other generations. This book is a tribute to them.”

All proceeds from the book sales go directly to the Fremantle Primary School P&C to generate extra-curricular activities and infrastructure for the whole school. Fremantle Primary is a unique learning community nestled in the heart of Fremantle. With a diverse range of cultural, artistic and sporting facilities on its doorstep, students are privy to an array of education options. The school has a rich and embedded values program, with students being encouraged to show respect, honesty and responsibility in their learning and behaviour. Parents are considered partners in our school, and take an active and engaged approach to their children’s schooling.
